On the road bordering Meanchey district’s Phum Russey Primary School, motorbike drivers cover their mouths against the intense smell of garbage, and residents say they have difficulty breathing.

“It’s such a bad smell … when walking or even riding a motorbike we need to cover our mouths and we can’t breathe for a while,” said Mao Sarin, an accountant living on the street in Stung Meanchey 2 commune.

The road has two primary schools as well as several factories and rental accommodations. Trash bags pile up on and all around garbage carts left near the entrance of the street.

Sarin said Phnom Penh trash collection company Cintri came to pick up the garbage only two to three times a week, on an irregular schedule. Meanwhile, neighbors — he said he did not know exactly who — left their trash scattered everywhere.

“It’s hard for every factory worker and young child when they walk on this road,” he said. The mess had been going on for three years already, he added.

Rotana Brayut, who was recently driving his motorbike down the street, said he rarely used the road because when he rode with his daughter she would complain about difficulties breathing.

“Especially now that it’s rainy season … it’s really hard,” Brayut said.

Sung Sovan, a vendor living opposite Sarin, put the blame squarely on her neighbors.

Sung Sovan, selling soap, says her neighbors litter on her street in Phnom Penh’s Meanchey district. (Va Sopheanut)

“The company collecting the garbage is good, but the issue is some people do not understand about littering,” she said. Residents put their trash all over the road when the carts were full, she said.

Cintri’s chief of Meanchey district garbage collection, Khun Samphors, also said residents were at fault, though he argued that local authorities should do more to help.

Cintri wants people to leave trash outside their houses rather than along the school wall, and at one point it removed the garbage carts there to encourage the behavior, he said.

But residents just left their trash on the ground where the carts used to be, so the company brought them back, Samphors said.

“It’s their habit,” he said. “We can remove the carts from the street again if authorities will be there to cooperate. The authorities must wait and stop people from throwing rubbish there.”

Commune chief Touch Sam Ol, however, said the smell was Cintri’s failure. Residents had no other option than to put their garbage around the provided carts because many lived down small lanes where garbage trucks could not go.

As a result, the trash was left rotting on the street for days, he said.

“I have reported this to the garbage company and I have prepared a letter for Cintri, but I haven’t seen anyone come to take it,” Sam Ol said.

City Hall spokesman Meth Measpheakdey said the city was aware of garbage collection issues around Phnom Penh. City Hall apologized to citizens while it took bids to have three more companies help Cintri with the work, he said.

Irina Chakraborty, a Phnom Penh eco-businesswoman with a background in environmental engineering, said organic solids and liquids could cause bad smells even after the waste was collected, and residents should clean the street if they wanted the smell to go away.

The smell from improperly disposed garbage could cause headaches, she said, and recommended composting either by households or at the municipal level.

According to the Environment Ministry, Phnom Penh produces 3,000 tons of garbage every day, and officials have suggested subsidies for recyclers similar to neighboring countries to try to combat the problem.

Nine artists will be featured in an art exhibition, Art in the Park, at the French Embassy on March 7 to encourage people’s love of nature.

On Thursday, the artists introduced their work for the upcoming showcase, which features creations made from recycled materials.

Leang Seckon, one of Cambodia’s leading artists, presented a 140-meter-long dragon made of household plastic waste.

“I used plastic in connection with nature — as in our everyday lives, when we live with both plastic and nature,” Seckon said.

He wants to promote a sense of responsibility toward nature, he said. “As an artist, I must work on in-depth projects that can foster the beauty of the environment.”

(An Khema)

Cambodian-American artist Sopheap Pich, meanwhile, fashioned butterfly wings out of the drooping branches of a large derm chrey tree on the embassy’s compound.

Pich said that in other countries he had seen the branches of old trees propped up by supports; unlike in Cambodia, where, he said, such branches would be trimmed or cut off.

“In China and Japan, they will use a pedestal to support the branch; but this tradition I have never seen in Phnom Penh so far,” he said.

A row of bamboo sticks placed under branches transforms them into wing-like walls.

Members of the public who wish to view the artworks on days other than March 7 are required to make an appointment with the French Embassy.

Embassy press officer Tung Soklim said that if there was high demand, the exhibition would be opened to the public for a second day.

French Ambassador Eva Nguyen Binh said the inventive pieces had brought the trees in the embassy compound to life.

“These trees, through artistic proposals, become at the same time beings to which we pay tribute for their beauty and their fragility, refuges, witnesses of memory. They are like immobile terminals giving meaning to life,” Nguyen Binh said.

Next week’s exhibition — the embassy’s second Art in the Park event — features Ouk Chim Vichet, Gregory Gosselin, Riem Monisilong, Mak Remissa, Leang Seckon, Srey Bandaul, Meas Sokhorn, Sopheap Pich and Veasna Tith.

Correction: A previous version of this article incorrectly stated that an appointment was necessary to view the art on March 7. An appointment is required only to view the art on other days.

Cheng Sokhorng has been discouraged from pursuing her career in journalism, both at home and at work.

Cheng Sokhorng has been discouraged from pursuing her career in journalism, both at home and at work.

“My family always says there are many jobs better than being a journalist, and journalism is not suitable for a woman and not safe,” she says.

She started at The Cambodia Daily in 2009 and also worked at the The Phnom Penh Post as a business reporter. She recently became a freelancer so she can write news more freely, she says.

“I found that the job was not the same as before; I could not bring information properly to the public,” she says. “So I decided to become a freelancer, so I could report more or less independently.”

At work, a male-dominated field routinely behaves insensitively toward the women in it, she says. “You will see more men in your office and outside while reporting, and you will hear teasing or bullying words.”

Both in the newsroom and in the field, female journalists in Cambodia often find that they are alone. Significantly outnumbered by men, they encounter insensitivity and even harassment, they say. The people around them — especially their families, but even colleagues — suggest that the work is not for them, with too many safety and security concerns.

However, some of the women who have stuck with journalism in Cambodia say they take pride in defying the stereotypes.

Khan Leakhena, a reporter at VOD, says she sometimes doesn’t feel like a woman in her work — she chases interviewees among mobs of reporters, and is dressed to run.

But it’s work she loves and believes in. “This job can help people in my country,” she says.

The challenges have been frequent, she says. She has been harassed by locals during field reporting trips to the provinces, and even by other journalists on the job.

“When there is a male-dominant workplace, they always joke around about some topic about girls or something, which makes me feel uncomfortable,” Leakhena says. “Sometimes I might clap back, or I’ll just pretend that I don’t care so it won’t affect our teamwork.”

When she went on a reporting trip to Svay Rieng province in October for a feature on health and education, she faced unwelcome attention after an interview. “A local man kept asking me to drink beer and wanted to hold my hand,” she says.

Afterward, her parents told her to resign because they did not want her to continue traveling and face risks. It took a lot of convincing to gain their support again, she says.

At VOD, Leakhena is one of only two women in a news team of about 15, including all-male editors.

“When there is breaking news, they mostly send male journalists to report the news. They don’t think that sometimes women can do even better,” she says. “Please don’t underestimate women’s abilities.”

Despite the obstacles, however, Leakhena believes that female journalists are invaluable to the industry, and she encourages more women to join the field.

“Please don’t be scared to do what you want,” Leakhena says. “We don’t need anyone to empower us, just empower ourselves and do it.”

“Every time I see that I’m the lone female journalist in a crowd, I feel really proud of myself,”

One of her editors, Sun Sokhen, says VOD makes an effort to hire female journalists, and attributes the lack of women in the newsroom to a lack of interest among women.

“Female applicants are always rare,” he says. “Women themselves think that it is a dangerous kind of work and it is only for men … [and] her family might think it is too dangerous for her.”

He says he would like to have more women in the newsroom, because they would understand women’s issues better and “it is the nature of women to be good at communicating; the way they talk and their strategy to convince people are better than men.”

Sokhen adds that VOD has policies around gender-respecting behavior. Sometimes the male-dominant newsroom goes too far in making insensitive jokes, but “there is nothing serious about it,” he says.

A 2018 report by the Fojo Institute, a Swedish organization that promotes free and independent media, says female journalists in the country face a slew of challenges.

Its survey of 131 Cambodian journalists found a predominance of men in the field, particularly in the provinces and among freelancers; family pressures on women primarily around security fears; and more field opportunities given to men due to the assumption that women are more vulnerable. Two women surveyed said their husbands wanted to divorce them because of the demands of their work.

Sokhorng, the freelancer, says that in the face of obstacles, women journalists have learned to rely on themselves. “Everything depends on us, whether it’s taking care to maintain transparency and security, or even to encourage ourselves.”

Correction (January 24): An earlier version of this article misstated that Khan Leakhena traveled alone to Svay Rieng for a reporting trip in October. She traveled with a camera operator.

The foreign-language proficiency of many schoolchildren should give them a leg up in future careers, but for some parents it also hints at a troubling trend: Surrounded by YouTube videos and social media sites in English, a generation could be drifting away from Cambodia’s national language.

Many schoolchildren in Phnom Penh are finding it hard to speak Khmer correctly after going to English-language schools, some parents said.

Their proficiency in a foreign language should give them a leg up in future careers, but for some it also hints at a troubling trend: Surrounded by YouTube videos and social media sites in English, a generation could be drifting away from Cambodia’s national language.

Chan Sarem, who has three daughters, said her youngest 12-year-old doesn’t like using Khmer, and when she speaks the language her pronunciation is unclear and sounds like a foreigner.

“She calls me ‘mom’ instead of the Khmer style” of using the word Mae, Sarem said. “Sometimes, she speaks English with her sisters when they don’t want me to understand. It makes me feel left out.”

Her older daughters, who are 22 and 24, don’t have the same problem.

But the youngest, who started at an English school when she was 6, is growing up preferring to use English over Khmer, she said.

La Vannsotheavuth said his 5-year-old son started at an English kindergarten when he was 3, and, surrounded by friends who speak English and YouTube videos also in the foreign language, he was having some difficulty pronouncing Khmer.

Vannsotheavuth therefore needed to make an extra effort to teach Khmer at home, he said.

He would have preferred that his son attend a Khmer school, but he knew that learning English would help his son get a better job in the future, so reluctantly sent him to the English kindergarten, he said.

He saw the same situation happening to many children around him, he said. “I often see many parents speak English to their children, even though they are Cambodian. The children cannot use the Khmer language correctly.”

Vannsotheavuth said he found the situation concerning. “For me, I am a patriotic person so I think about the future of our culture and language, how it can affect the value of our history, the loss of a sense of belonging, the usage of the Khmer language — especially, the possible disappearance of this language.”

Another parent, Thun Navy, a sales manager with two young children, said his eldest, a 3-year-old girl, learns only English and Chinese at kindergarten, and always mixes Khmer and English when she speaks.

“My child uses English mixed with Khmer, but it’s not my intention to make my child speak English better than Khmer,” he said.

However, the best schools, especially for younger children, teach in foreign languages, so he sent her to a private school rather than a public Khmer school, he said.

“It’s because there are not many public schools that accept kids under 4 years old, and private schools have more programs for students,” he said.

Chry Pengchhy, part-owner of an English school in Pur Senchey district, acknowledged that it was a common trend for many children to become better at foreign languages than Khmer.

Some parents even prefer to speak foreign languages with their children at home, he said.

“Today’s use of the Khmer language has really changed, from my observations of each family. Most parents speak foreign languages to their children based on [the parents’ own] ability,” Pengchhy said.

He agreed that Khmer writing, speaking and listening skills were declining among the new generation, and the government and parents should step in to improve the situation.

“Firstly, the state must limit the age when students can start to study a foreign language and should prioritize the national language first. Secondly, parents need to use and teach their children Khmer more.”

Education Ministry spokesman Ros Soveacha would say only that parents were free to choose where to send their children, and the ministry was working to improve education at all levels, from kindergarten through to the university level.

English lessons were added to the Khmer public school curriculum in 1996 starting from Grade 7, and were expanded to start at Grade 4 from 2017, according to the Phnom Penh Post.

Khmer Literature scholars said the trend among schoolchildren was concerning for the future of the Khmer language.

Chhin Seyha, a member of the language commission at the Royal Academy of Cambodia and a Khmer Literature trainer at Pannasastra University, said many Cambodians already do not use the Khmer language well, as they seem to value foreign languages more than Khmer.

“I see that using foreign languages rather than the Khmer language leads to a deficit in the Khmer language, leads to a lack of a lot of words in use, leads to the loss of identity, leads to younger generations having a crisis of writing,” Seyha said.

He suggested a variety of policies to promote Khmer, including prioritizing Khmer at schools, establishing a national independent authority on the language, and even penalizing people who write Khmer incorrectly.

Choub Sokleab, a 29-year-old fourth-year student majoring in Khmer Literature at Preah Sihanouk Raja Buddhist University, said that incorrect Khmer grammar and spelling was becoming more common, especially online.

“In our society nowadays, on Facebook and other media, children in Phnom Penh and the provinces use Khmer language in a limited way. Their usage of the Khmer language is wrong according to Khmer rules; they do not write well, and are wrong in both grammar and spelling,” Sokleab said.

He said it was even possible that the Khmer language would become a second language for some Khmer youths, who already write Khmer using the Latin alphabet when communicating with each other digitally.

“I think that if we continue to urge children to learn foreign languages much more than our Khmer language, it will become a second language,” he said. “New generations in the 21st century are likely to mostly use foreign languages.”
