For Young Writers, Books Are a Way to Show Youth a Better Path

Two young philosophy authors say they write books because they want to help youths who are dealing with depression, lose their way in life or become influenced by “poisonous” people.

Set Hatha, writer of “The Breath,” and Souy Linpao, a 21-year-old who has written about social justice and solidarity, are among a new generation of popular writers whose messages are resonating with many young people in Cambodia.

Hatha, who writes under the name Kon Chapmeas, says that youth extremism is a growing danger in society. Extremist youth want to help the country, but forget to improve their own abilities through knowledge and research. They are prone to depression, becoming lost without a plan for their lives and falling under the influence of poisonous people, she says.

Because they lack experience, they heed the words of others; they want success without having basic knowledge, so they try without direction and fail. “They won’t take it step by step, and instead seek the goal quickly and do stupid things based on the persuasion of others. The result is getting cheated by poisonous people,” Hatha says.

In one of her stories, she tells of when she first arrived in Phnom Penh. She was cheated by her employer, made to work without getting paid.

Her books focus on the importance of basic knowledge, being well-prepared in making plans, and not getting cheated by other people.

She says that for her, books allow her to express something closer to what’s in her mind and heart than when she speaks, because she can spend time to think about her words and edit what she writes. Books are also a way to record the wisdom of older generations that have not been written down, she adds.

Linpao, meanwhile, sees the role of his short stories and novels as presenting to society a reflection of itself. “Books are a mirror of society. To be a young person with potential, we need to read critically, write and analyze facts,” he says. He observes that people must enhance morality, social justice and solidarity to build the nation.

In his short story, “Frog Complaint,” he says that once upon a time frogs, other animals and plants faced the same dilemma: They were running out of water. Therefore, they came together to fight against the god Ta Prom to force him to make it rain. However, today, only frogs are still in need of rain while the others already have some water, the story says, reflecting on the difference between social classes. Therefore, solidarity fails to appear, it says. In the end, Ta Prom uses his power to hurt all of the frogs. Readers are struck by a message of social justice and solidarity and the importance of working together.

“All books are valuable and meaningful to change our perspectives, a path to train your mind,” he says.

Skipped Meals and Junk Food: Pressed for Time, Busy Students’ Health Suffers

During his first year of university, Chhai Yorn started to vomit in the mornings and struggled to sleep. He had developed stomach ulcers from skipping meals and eating junk food all the time, he said.

Yorn said he had trouble remembering his lessons while he was sick, which deepened his stress and made his ailments even worse.

Like Yorn, many Cambodian university students are facing health issues because of the pressure they are under: The difficulty of balancing studies with work is leading to unhealthy lifestyles and eating habits, students and nurses said.

The problem is particularly common among students who have just begun living away from home, they said.

“This is my first time living alone, away from my family,” Yorn said.

He shares a room with three friends, and the transition has been challenging, the second-year Pannasastra University business student said.

He had no time to prepare proper meals, and usually ate instant noodles during class.

“I knew it was not good for my health, but I had no choice so I recklessly ignored it until it got worse,” he said.

To reduce the financial burden on his family in Oddar Meanchey province caused by his university studies, Yorn was earning some money through full-time, paid volunteering at the Documentation Center of Cambodia, which archives records from the Khmer Rouge. But it left him little time to take care of himself.

“Rushing to school, I didn’t have enough time to cook for myself; therefore, I usually found easy ways to have a meal like noodles, potatoes and fried eggs several times per week,” he said. “I did not realize that I had a stomach problem because I think all students are experiencing the same conditions like me during their studies.”

But his condition gradually got worse, he said.

“It was not easy,” he said. He felt like vomiting in the mornings, and his breath was smelling worse, he said.

Several other students — even those who are not working — said they faced a similar situation.

Cheng Ratanak Sombo, a sophomore majoring in teaching English as a second language, also at Pannasastra, said she developed stomach problems in grade 12 while studying hard to pass her diploma, and it got worse during her first year of university.

“I normally studied at home alone until I forgot to eat dinner. Instead of having rice, I had an energy drink to help me stay awake to study longer. In the past, I drank one or two cans every single day,” Ratanak Sombo said.

She continued this routine until one day she suddenly fainted in the middle of class. Her teacher had to get her medical help.

A doctor told her to stop eating junk food and eat more regularly. However, she found it hard to maintain an appetite, she said.

“The doctor did not allow me to eat any kind of spicy food, and [said] I should eat healthy food every day,” she said. “But my favorite snack is mango with spicy salt and energy drinks. I’m always dying to eat these things. It’s hard to blame anyone as I cannot maintain my self-control.”

A recent survey of more than 1,300 Cambodian university students found that rates of inactive lifestyles and unhealthy food consumption were “concerning.”

“Public policy and universities should promote healthy behaviors among the students,” said the study, conducted by researchers from the Khana Center for Population Health Research and the Royal University of Phnom Penh.

About 10 percent of respondents said they had eaten no fruits or vegetables in the past seven days.

More than 83 percent of respondents drank at least one glass of soft drink or sweet tea a day, and about 40 percent ate fast food at least once a week, according to the study.

The research, posted online last year, also looked at sleeping habits and found that more than 50 percent had moderate or severe problems sleeping, with a further 33 percent having mild troubles.

According to Man Kanda, a nurse who specializes in internal medicine, health issues due to poor diets are a noticeable and growing concern among university students.

Young people tend to pay little attention to what they consume, she said.

“When people don’t have proper and substantial meals, it can bring many disadvantages to their health,” Kanda said. Symptoms could include stomach problems, weak immune systems and mental problems, she said.

Kanda said that for students, eating regularly and getting enough vitamins were a must, no matter how busy they were.

She recommended getting to sleep before midnight, eating breakfast before 9 a.m., having lunch every day, and taking dinner at least four hours before going to sleep. Students should also drink milk and exercise regularly, she said.

Yorn, the Pannasastra student who suffered from stomach ulcers, said he was now making an effort to be healthier.

“Now I know that I need to take care of my health first; otherwise, I cannot concentrate on my studies or my work,” he said. “It stressed me out and affected my mood whenever I was not feeling well. Plus, my mom was very concerned about me. I felt bad for causing this trouble for myself and others.”

A Lifestyle Journalist Experiences Some Political Journalism

We started on Wednesday, December 4, 2019 and today is Saturday,  January 4, 2020, so it has been a few weeks since I joined the professional journalism training course at CCIM.

It is seven years since I became a lifestyle journalist. Where I usually appear are luxury hotels or five-star hotels, nice restaurants, modern automotive dealerships, businesses and fashion events, etc. … any place where people can enjoy their lifestyles and spend their money to release their stress. But I really don’t know about places where people face violence, where they hurt and lose their beloved in life.

This week I had a new experience in my training class with my team, called B2G (Two Boys & One Girl). We are working on a story with a news angle about “Monks Face Restrictions to Their Freedoms While Practicing Non-Violent Activism in Cambodia.” And we are interviewing those involved in this topic, such as civil society organizations, NGOs, monks, local authorities, leaders of the Mother Nature environmental group. I am responsible for interviewing monk Keut Saray, the leader of a monk pilgrimage campaign from Phnom Penh to Sihanoukville to push for authorities to remove casino Jing Ding from Koh Rong island beach.

I also joined and photographed the event “Two former CNRP lawmakers on Thursday, January 2, 2020 announce a new political party, the Cambodia Nation Love Party at Sunway Hotel Phnom Penh” with Mr. Vann Vichar, a VOD Reporter, and my team member Mr. Sylong Aun, who is a trainee with me.

When I turned on RFA radio online on my smartphone, a usual part of my daily routine, on the night of January 2 something touched my brain about one headline, “6 Years After Deadly Crackdown at Canadia Industrial Park along Veng Sreng Street on January 3, 2014, Victims’ Families Say No Hope for Justice,” and especially about Khim Sophat, the little boy who disappeared and is thought to have been shot dead during the crackdown but whose remains still have not been found.

On the morning of Friday, January 3 I was assigned by my trainer Mr. Chhorn Chansy and Mr. Michael Dickison go with Mr. Sok Heng, VOD reporter, to attend and cover the story, “The Remembrance Day of 6 Years Anniversary of Violent Crackdown,” a ceremony held at labor NGO Central.

The Adventures of a Zero-Experience Journalist

A wise old man once said, “There are two types of pain. One that hurts you and the other that changes you.” And I just experienced one kind of positive pain.

It was during the countdown day. It all started when my friends were posting their traveling pictures during countdown day, and I was blessed to be romantically riding on a boat under the brightest sun to conduct an interview on Boeung Tompun Lake.

Surprisingly, it was a blessing in disguise. Yep, It was my very first time to go to the lake and to interview people, so I did enjoy it a lot because I had the chance to witness the life of local people and listen to their stories and concerns about the future of the lake. It was heart-breaking to listen to their story, but it showed me that happiness can be found in every place and time.

Plus, I saw an extra piece of breaking news, behind the scenes, of cops trying to catch a burglar.

Long story short, it was as touching and overriding a gift as I’ve ever given myself for the new year. I have realized that happiness will come in different forms and unexpected turns. Every day is a good day to have a good day. Well, this best memory could not have gone so well without the bad idea suggested by my caring teachers and supportive teammates.

At the time, I wished it was a prank as I didn’t know there was something good waiting for me, until it became a memory.

I Meet My Passion

Since becoming a trainee at CCIM, I have come across a lot of experiences and sharings from trainers and teammates. I have realized that my interest is researching and analyzing. I love to listen to the style of reading news on the radio. As a Social Sciences and International Relations student, I must read and follow regional and international events that happen every day, but I cannot distinguish the root causes or the intentions behind them. Currently, what I see as my purpose has met with CCIM, to analyze the news, sources and intentions behind the scenes. I can upgrade my critical thinking, English, and writing, especially to move toward a future master’s degree abroad.

New Tests, New Experiences

Through three days being the head of state of Brunei Darussalam in the Cambodian National Model ASEAN Meeting (CNMAM), I practiced the ASEAN protocol, ASEAN+U.S meeting, and how to fight for one’s own national interest. One interesting thing was Protocol Power, which was covered by co-chairs Laos and the United States. They can dominate all the delegates to pursue their own interests. At one point, I felt my English was still limited, and they spoke fluently and knew clearly the protocol process. At that time, I really wanted to fight with them, but my scarcity and fear told me not to. I strongly supported the clause that ASEAN must commit to reducing environmental pollution, as proposed by Thailand, but the United States wanted to omit it. I want to object and say, “not consensus.” But it would have made the social-cultural committee unsuccessful, and I found it impossible. Finally, I had to follow them. All in all, by joining this program, I am ready to confront upcoming national and international programs that I want to participate in.

What I Learned This Week (Week 3)

For this week, I have learned many lessons, both theory and practice.

  • I know how to work as a team
  • I know what I face when I go to interview
  • I know how to solve problems or conflicts
  • I understand about how to select the hot news
  • I understand what kinds of news there are (feature, hot news, and vox pop writing)

Newsroom During the Last Week of 2019

I have learned from new experiences and spent the last day of the year with all my friends and teachers in Newsroom, which is great and so productive that I can still learn more new things. Reflecting on news is still going very well, and reading the news every day has become my hobby.

On Tuesday, we went to interview people around Boeung Tamoak lake. The lake is a bit far from our place, so we needed to take a tuk-tuk to get there and spend much money for the tuk-tuk driver. But this lesson was learned and I hope next time we will not spend that much money to commute.

I interviewed one lady who is living there about her family situation after the lake was filled in at some parts. I got her story, but we needed to find more people to interview. We took a tuk-tuk to a family who lost their home and jobs as fishers after the lake was damaged, which is sad to hear the news.

We also went the wrong way with the tuk tuk driver. We lost time to get to the people after we went the wrong direction.

This was a really good memory for us, of the time we did the interviews. But at least we got the information we wanted. Cheers and appreciation for that.

Third-Week Surprise

On December 31, during the third week of class, and the last day of 2019, everyone tended to have plans after class, including me. So I wore high heels and was dressed up for a party after class.

When everyone arrived in class, the teachers surprised us with a mission. We have to go out for interviews at Boeung Tamoak and Boeung Tompun lakes, we had six people and were separated into two groups.

Me and my group went to Boeung Tompun lake; it was a funny and busy day. When we arrived, we saw farmers in the lake so we agreed to get near the lake and ask her for an interview. Because the road is hard to walk on, I had to take off my shoes and walk on the hot ground to get near the lake. Luckily, we could borrow a boat from the farmer, but we did not really know how to ride it. It took around 15 minute to get near the farmer’s boat.

When the interview was underway for a few minutes, suddenly many police officers came after a thief. The thief ran into the lake near our boat. We stopped the interview and asked each other, “What happened?” Police shouted at the thief (“Get out of the water or you’ll see when I get you!”) and then they turned to us and asked us to ride back to them because they needed to borrow our boat. We were wondering, as the water is not deep, but they were not going to deal with getting in the water to catch the thief. It was really hard for us to ride the boat back when we are not good at riding boats. Hence, it took another 15 minutes to get back, and the thief was gone already.

We waited for the police to return our boat and finish our interview, under the hot sun — it was really hot and I felt my feet burning because I was standing on a plastic tube without shoes.

Moral of my story: Don’t wear high heels when you are a journalist or even during training time. Be ready! A mission can come anytime.

Phnom Penh Lakes ‘on the Brink of Elimination’: Report

Every lake in Phnom Penh has been damaged by development and its wetlands decimated, leading to severe flooding, loss of livelihoods and disappearance of fish species, a new report says.

Journalism Is Part of My Lifelong Learning

Hello everyone, I am Engly Tuy. In my journalism career, everybody has called me Sakura. I studied tourism and hospitality, as well as English for administration, in Phnom Penh. Currently, I am running a news website called FYN Media (findyournews.media) linked to my Facebook Page FYP (Find Your Photos – រករូបអ្នក).

I am a former journalist of the newspapers Phnom Penh Post and Post Khmer (both owned by Post Media) from 2013 to 2016, and also a former journalist at the Khmer Times newspaper (Virtus Media) from 2016 to 2018. After I left from the Khmer Times, I worked as a freelancer at La Reine Peanich Newspaper and magazine and as a freelance copywriter.

You may be wondering: I am a graduate of tourism & hospitality and English for administration — “how could I become a journalist?” Or you may be wondering: I have journalism experience of almost seven years — “why do I need to join journalism training?” In my long educational journey, when I started my bachelor degree in Phnom Penh, I didn’t even know what a “professional journalist” was until one day during 2013, I passed my interview at the Phnom Penh Post as an events & marketing supervisor. During that period I pushed myself to become an assistant reporter in the lifestyle section in the Post Media newsroom. It was a good opportunity to work closely with professional journalists at the company. In 2016, I moved to the Khmer Times newspaper as a reporter/ journalist and photographer. These responsibilities made me become a professional journalist and photographer.

However, though I have experience as a professional journalist and photographer, I did not graduate from the Department of Media and Communications or any professional journalism school beside my work experience. This is the main reason why I feel I need to join the “Journalism Training at CCIM,” to learn more about what is different from my experience. I especially want to learn “How to write about political issues with professionalism, security, freedom and transparency.”

For me, learning never ends, and I am happy to have a new challenge in my career and life.

Thank so much for offering the opportunity.
